Jhal Muri Kolkata Street Food – Savoury Puffed Rice Chaat

Jhaal muri (spiced puffed rice) is a quintessential Kolkata street food. Jhalmuri is a healthy and delicious snack made with crisp puffed rice, fresh cucumber, boiled potato, onion, boiled or sprouted chickpeas, tomato, fresh coriander, and a mustard oil and lemon drizzle. Take bland and basic muri several levels up, with fresh and vibrant ingredients in this easy jhalmuri recipe! And the mustard oil adds a distinct zing to this puffed rice chaat recipe.
To make this popular Kolkata street food, firstly soak the chickpeas overnight. Next day drain the water and wash well.
Boil the potato and kala chana. Allow to cool down and drain the water from the kala chana and keep aside. Chop the boiled potatoes and set aside.
Chop the onion, green chilli, tomato, cucumber, coriander leaves and keep aside.
Heat a little oil in a pan and roast the peanuts till they pop. Remove and keep aside.
Then, in a large mixing bowl, combine puffed rice, chopped onions, boiled or sprouted chickpeas, boiled and chopped potatoes, chopped cucumber, chopped tomato, chopped green chilli, chopped coriander leaves and roasted peanuts.
Next add black salt, chaat masala, store-bought chanachur and sev.
Then drizzle lemon juice and mustard oil.
Toss again to mix well. Adjust seasoning and spice levels to taste.
Finally, garnish with thinly sliced coconut.

Ingredients
3cupspuffed rice
½cupkala chanaboiled
1large potatoboiled
2tbspcoriander leaveschopped

Instructions
To make Jhal Muri, firstly soak chickpeas overnight.
Next day, drain the water, wash well and boil chickpeas (you can use sprouted chana too) and potatoes.
Drain the boiled chickpeas and keep aside. Peel the potato and dice into cubes.
Finely chop onion, green chilli, tomato, coriander leaves and cucumber. Thinly slice coconut.
Take muri in a large mixing bowl. Add onion, green chilli, tomato, boiled potato, chickpeas, cucumber and peanuts and toss well.
Tip in chanachur and sev. Sprinkle black salt and chaat masala and combine well.
Drizzle mustard oil and lemon juice and toss everything well.
Garnish with coconut slices.
Serve Kolkata Jhalmuri with masala chai and pakoda.
