7 Grams of Olive Oil a Day Keeps Dementia at Bay

7 Grams of Olive Oil a day helps reduce the risk of dementia. According to researchers from Harvard School of Public Health, consuming about ½ tbsp. per day of olive oil might reduce the risk of dementia-related death.

Discover the surprising power of just 7 grams of olive oil daily in warding off dementia. Learn how this simple dietary addition, rooted in the Mediterranean tradition, can safeguard cognitive health and promote healthy aging.

7 Grams of Olive Oil:

According to this observational study, people who consume more than 7 grams of olive oil daily (about ½ tbsp.) had significantly lower risk of dying from dementia than those who never or rarely consumed olive oil.

Incorporating more olive oil into daily diet, at least 7 grams per day, was associated with a 28% lower risk of dementia-related death, regardless of the quality of the diet and after adjusting for a certain gene that raises the risk of dementia.

Research also showed that substituting 5 grams per day of margarine and mayonnaise with an equivalent amount of olive oil lowered the risk of dementia-related deaths by 8% and 14%, respectively.

Other studies have shown that olive oil use helps lower the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disease, cancer and respiratory disease.

There seems to be a positive association between consuming heart-healthy fats such as olive oil and improved brain health.

Olive oil is a key component of the Mediterranean diet. It’s rich in antioxidants. The majority of fats in olive oil are monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), which experts consider healthful fats.

What is Dementia:

Dementia is a progressive neurological condition characterized by a decline in cognitive function, including memory loss, impaired reasoning, and difficulties with communication and daily activities. It is caused by damage to brain cells, often resulting from diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease or vascular dementia.

Individuals with dementia may experience changes in mood and behaviour, along with challenges in maintaining independence and performing familiar tasks. As the condition advances, it can profoundly impact an individual’s quality of life and require increasing levels of support and care from loved ones or healthcare professionals.

Olive Oil in your diet:

Incorporating olive oil, especially extra-virgin, into your diet is both simple and rewarding. One easy way to enjoy its health benefits is by using it as a flavourful and versatile substitute for other cooking oils in your favourite recipes.

Whether you’re sautéing vegetables, grilling meats, or roasting potatoes, olive oil adds a rich, distinct flavour while imparting its heart-healthy properties. Drizzling olive oil over salads or using it as a dip for crusty bread is another delicious way to savour its fruity aroma and robust taste. Additionally, you can incorporate olive oil into homemade dressings, marinades, and sauces to elevate the flavour profile of your dishes.

With its countless culinary applications, olive oil offers a delicious and nutritious addition to any diet, contributing to both palate satisfaction and overall well-being.

With just 7 grams a day, we can take proactive steps towards nurturing our brain health and enjoying a fulfilling life well into our golden years.
