I made a fresh batch of home-style cinnamon sweet rolls from scratch yesterday and my family just devoured them all. The cinnamon swirls were moist and filled with sweet goodness. How to make Old-Fashioned Cinnamon Rolls:
- To make sweet cinnamon buns, firstly pour warm milk in a bowl and sprinkle the yeast on top. Allow to proof in the warm milk for about 10 minutes till frothy.

Next add the sugar, salt and soft butter to the bowl and whisk well.
- Then gradually add flour and beat thoroughly to form a soft dough. Use a damp towel to cover the dough. Leave to rise in a warm place for 1 hour.
- While the dough is resting, mix brown sugar and cinnamon powder in a small bowl. Set aside.
- Dust some flour on the work surface to keep the dough from sticking and then turn out the dough on the lightly floured surface.
- Flour the rolling-pin and roll out the dough into a rectangle.
- After this, use a spatula to coat the entire dough rectangle with a thin layer of softened butter.
- Then sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon uniformly over the buttered rectangle.
- Roll up the cinnamon-brown sugar sweet bread tightly into a cylinder, making sure to seal the edges as best as you can and then cut the rolled-up dough into ¾ inch pieces.
- Place the swirls in a greased baking tin. Cover the swirls with plastic wrap or aluminum foil and let rise to almost double in a warm place for 30 minutes.
- Meanwhile pre-heat the baking oven.
- Once the swirls have risen and are nice and puffy, remove the foil or plastic wrap.
- Bake in the pre-heated oven (190C) for 25 minutes till golden brown.
- Serve light and fluffy Cinnamon Rolls warm with a drizzling of cottage cheese or plain icing or even salted caramel.

Sweet Cinnamon Swirls Recipe
Ingredients
- All-purpose Flour – 2 ½ cups
- Milk – 1 cup
- Active Dry Yeast – 2 ¼ tsp
- Butter – 2 tbsp
- Sugar – 1 tbsp
- Salt – 1 tsp
For sprinkling:
- Brown Sugar – ½ cup
- Ground Cinnamon – 1 tsp
For spreading:
- Butter – about ¼ cup
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, sprinkle yeast over a cup of warm milk and leave aside for 10 minutes.
- Mix well and gradually add softened butter, sugar and salt. Blend well.
- Add the flour and mix thoroughly for 5 minutes until the dough is just about firm.
- Cover with a damp towel and keep in a warm place to let rise for one hour.
- Meanwhile, combine brown sugar and powdered cinnamon in a bowl and keep aside.
- Turn over the yeast-leavened dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll out into ¼ inch thick rectangle.
- Spread butter evenly with a knife.
- Sprinkle cinnamon-brown sugar mix uniformly over the entire rolled out dough.
- Roll up the dough into a log and cut into ¾ inch pieces.
- Arrange the cut cinnamon rolls in a greased pan, placing the cut side down.
- Cover with a damp cloth and leave to rise for about 30 minutes.
- Bake at 190C for 25 minutes.
- Remove and cool on a wire rack.
- Serve Homemade Cinnamon Rolls warm with your favourite icing.
