Tomato Dal Fry With Tur Dal – Andhra Tomato Pappu With Onion Garlic

Tomato Dal Andhra style is lentils cooked with tomato and spices. Andhra Tomato Pappu has a rich texture and a distinctive tangy flavour. Lentils and tomatoes are a great combination. Served over steaming hot rice and a dash of ghee, it’s just yum!

Andhra Tomato Dal

Tomato is a superfood that’s rich in anti-oxidants, excellent for heart health and helps lower cholesterol levels. It’s loaded with Vitamin C, has anti-cancer properties and boosts bone health.

Pappu with tomatoes is a popular and delicious dal recipe from Andhra. A healthy and surprisingly easy and tasty dish that pairs well with steamed rice or parathas. A yummy way to use lentils.

Tomato Pappu (Telugu) is known for its bold flavour and colourful appearance. It tastes awesome with hot rice and a dollop of ghee!

  • To make pappu with tomatoes, firstly slice the onions, chop tomatoes, chillies and coriander leaves.
Ingredients for pappu with tomatoes
  • Then wash tur dal well. Pressure cook the dal. Open the lid and lightly mash the dal. Set aside.
Boil dal
  • Heat oil in a saute pan. Splutter mustard seeds, cumin seeds and garlic.
  • Then add fresh curry leaves, chopped onion and chillies. Fry for a couple of minutes.
Saute onions
  • Next tip in the tomatoes, sprinkle turmeric powder and combine well. Cook till tomatoes soften.
Cook tomatoes
  • Pour in the cooked tur dal. Add salt and tamarind paste and mix well.
  • Cook for ten minutes over a low-medium flame. Remove and set aside.
Add boiled dal
  • Heat oil in a pan. Splutter mustard seeds, cumin seeds and red chillies. Then add asafoetida, curry leaves and urad dal.

Prepare tempering

  • Now add this tempering to the tomato dal.
Andhra Tomato Pappu
  • Garnish dal with fresh coriander leaves.
  • Serve Tomato Dal with hot rice and ghee.

Tomato Pappu Recipe

Ingredients

  • Tur Dal/ Kandi Pappu – 1/3 cup
  • Onion – 1 medium, sliced
  • Garlic – 3 pods, lightly crushed
  • Tomato – 1 large. chopped
  • Green Chilli - 1
  • Curry Leaves – 1 sprig
  • Coriander leaves – 1 tsp
  • Oil – ½ tbsp
  • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
  • Cumin seeds – ¼ tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Turmeric – ½ tsp
  • Tamarind Paste, optional – 1 tsp

For tempering:

  • Mustard seeds – ¼ tsp
  • Cumin seeds – ¼ tsp
  • Urad dal – ¼ tsp
  • Red Chilli – 1
  • Curry Leaves – 1 sprig
  • Asafoetida – a pinch

Instructions

  • Wash and pressure cook the tur dal until soft. Lightly mash and keep aside.
  • Add oil in a pan, add mustard seeds and allow to crackle. Add cumin seeds, sauté, add garlic flakes and stir till slight brown,
  • Add onions, green chillies and curry leaves and stir for 1-2 minutes.
  • Add tomatoes and turmeric and mix well. Cook till the tomatoes are well cooked and turn mushy.
  • Add the cooked and mashed dal, tamarind paste and salt to the onion-tomato mixture and combine well. Simmer for 10 minutes till a slightly thick consistency is reached.
  • Remove and keep aside.
  • Heat a teaspoon of oil and add mustard seeds, red chillies, cumin seeds, cook for 1-2 seconds, add a pinch of hing, urad dal and curry leaves. Stir and pour the tempering on top of the dal.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve Tomato Dal with steamed rice.

Notes

* You can use a combination of tur dal and moong dal also.
* You can add 1 tsp of tamarind paste to enhance flavour.
